Remember Who You Are

a sermon for the 1st Sunday after the Epiphany (The Baptism of Our Lord)

Epiphany is the season in which we lear how Jesus is revealed to the world little by little, as we progress from week to week.  If Advent is the season of waiting and watching, and Christmas is the season of God coming to live among us in Jesus Christ, then Epiphany is the season when God reveals who Jesus is and who he is called to become.  Last week, on the Feast of the Epiphany, and we heard the story of the magi who saw the star and followed it to Bethlehem; the star revealed Jesus to the magi.  This week the Gospel lesson tells us a very strange story about the baptism of Jesus, where, as he rises out of the waters of the Jordan river, he sees the Holy Spirit descending like a dove, and a voice from heaven proclaims

“This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”
